The Bright Seeds Story

Founded in 1988 by David and Sue Bright, Bright Seeds (formerly David Bright Limited) originally started out supplying mainly cattle feed and forage crops. David soon realised there was a gap in the market for game cover and stewardship seed supply, and Bright Seeds quickly became the leading supplier of these products. Many years of variety and mixture development, along with a continued passion for enhancing the countryside, means we remain a leading voice in the industry.

In 1988 compulsory set-aside was introduced which meant there was heightened demand for conservation seed. Ten years later the first countryside stewardship schemes were launched in the UK, and Bright Seeds were pivotal in developing the criteria for wild-bird mixtures and other conservation options.

Chris Bright joined the company in 1999 and added a huge amount of knowledge on conservation grasses and wildflowers, and in line with this our first wildflower seed crop was harvested in 2001. This side of the business has multiplied since and we are now harvesting nearly 20 sites across southern England, along with seed crops of individual species grown at Bright Seeds HQ to use in our seed mixtures.

Bright Seeds prides itself on having strong relationships with plant breeders across Europe, and this has led to us securing the rights to a range of exclusive products including Flightpath and Utopia.

In 2008 we started supplying seed mixtures to The Republic of Ireland, and in the years that followed Bright Seeds also joined forces with customers and other seed suppliers to begin exporting our exclusive products into Europe, most notably to France, Denmark and Austria.

We have always trialled our products and currently utilise our two-hectare demonstration site at Dean Lane Farm to try new products and ensure our current portfolio is the best possible for our customers. We have also trialled our products at a range of sites including Newton Rigg College in Cumbria and Stowell Park Estate in the Cotswolds.

In more recent years we have pushed hard to improve the efficiency of the company, all centred around our new premises at Dean Lane Farm in Fovant in Wiltshire. We have done a lot of work on the site since taking ownership in 2019. New offices and warehousing have been invaluable for coping with the recent boost in demand. We now also have improved wildflower processing facilities including new seed cleaners and a purpose made drying floor. The surrounding land is utilised for seed crops and our demonstration site. We also have a chiller and packing plant for our new hedging plant venture.

In 2023 Ben Dolbear and Arthur Barraclough became directors of the company, they have a combined experience of over 20 years within the industry and they share Chris Brights objectives for supplying the highest quality seed products and advice to Bright Seeds loyal customers.
