Canary Grass Seed | BSCG1
Canary Grass Seed – Long Term Cover Crop
Canary Grass is a long-term cover crop that produces a tall, dense, tussock-forming grass reaching heights of up to 6ft (1.8m). It is an excellent choice for creating permanent wildlife cover in areas where annual replanting is impractical or uneconomical, such as field margins, set-aside land, forest glades, and woodland plantations.
Highly versatile, Canary Grass provides multi-purpose cover for nesting, holding, and driving game birds. Its upright growth habit creates valuable shelter and protection while encouraging wildlife activity throughout the year.
For best results, Canary Grass should be established in rows spaced at a minimum of 30 inches apart, with 40–60 inches being ideal. Over time, the plant naturally spreads into the gaps between rows, creating a thicker stand. While this improves cover initially, older stands can become overly dense. Where this occurs, we recommend topping the crop in early spring and using a knapsack sprayer to create wider cleared strips. This management technique encourages the grass to grow taller while creating tunnels and canopy cover that are particularly beneficial for game birds and other wildlife.
As it can be slow to establish, weeds may become competitive during the first season. To help suppress weed growth and improve establishment, sowing a companion crop such as Lightning Mustard is recommended.
