GWCT Wildlife Mix

Exclusive to Bright Seeds – Supporting Conservation Through Innovation

Launched in Spring 2023, the GWCT Wildlife Mix was developed in collaboration with Dr. Francis Buner, Head of Wildlife Recovery at the Game & Wildlife Conservation Trust (GWCT). This exciting, stewardship-compliant mixture meets the requirements for both CAHL2 and AB9 options.

Key Features of the GWCT Wildlife Mix

  • UK Provenance & Native Species
Wherever possible, the mix uses UK-provenance seed and includes 47 plant species, with over 76% being native. Many of the wildflowers are hand-harvested by Bright Seeds from meadows across southern England.

  • Exceptional Support for Pollinators & Insects
The species-rich mix provides a continuous nectar and pollen source from early spring through to late autumn. Low-growing flowering species support ground-nesting birds, such as grey partridge, by aiding chick survival during the breeding season.

  • High Seed Yield for Farmland Birds
Designed to meet wild bird mixture requirements within stewardship schemes, the mix includes species like millet, sunflower, teasel, and chicory—essential feed sources for farmland birds throughout winter.

  • All-Year Habitat & Cover
Carefully selected species provide vertical structure and dense canopy for nesting and winter cover. In year one, dwarf grain sorghum and sunflowers provide immediate protection, while in subsequent years, chicory, teasel, sweet fennel, and mullein offer robust, long-lasting cover.

  • Long-Term Biodiversity Benefits
Thanks to perennial wildflowers and durable species such as chicory and teasel, this mix can thrive for up to ten years, delivering sustained habitat, food, and cover for wildlife.

Supporting Grey Partridge Recovery

For every hectare of the GWCT Wildlife Mix sold, Bright Seeds will donate £20 to the GWCT Grey Partridge Recovery Scheme, helping to restore populations of this iconic but threatened farmland bird.
