These mixtures are designed to be planted in the spring (generally April to June). We supply mixtures to provide dense cover, feed value or a combination of the two. Through our extensive trial work, we have also created mixtures which enable good levels of weed control. Using a kale-based mix will enable you to leave the crop for a second year.
Pheasant & Finch
Our trademark 2 year wild-bird mixture, created to benefit both game and farmland birds. The kale will produce a second-year cover, and ensure the mix lasts well into the winter. Grain sorghum stands up well to the elements too. Annual seed producers within the mix will produce a glut of high-energy seed for farmland birds through the autumn and winter.
Wildflower Pheasant & Finch
A 2 year mixture that carries all the benefits of the standard Pheasant & Finch mix but with the added value of the colourful flowering species. This not only looks attractive throughout the summer but includes nectar producing flowers for a wide variety of pollinating insects.
Radical Pheasant & Finch
This is an annual 1 year version of the standard Pheasant & Finch. In areas where kale struggles to establish fodder radish can be a good alternative. By replacing the kale with fodder radish also means this mix can be used as a ‘clubroot break’ to reduce the risk of disease build-up associated with growing continuous kale. The other components are all included at the same rate so the benefit to farmland birds isn’t compromised.
Highland Pheasant & Finch
Pheasant & Finch is a versatile mixture. However, when grown in areas further north certain elements don’t reach their full potential. With that in mind, we developed the 2 year Highland Mix. Sorghum (which needs a warm environment to establish well) has been replaced with fodder radish and Japanese Reed Millet, both of which will be well suited to more challenging growing areas. With the continued inclusion of kale, the crop will produce a useful second-year cover too.
Broad Buster
An annual mixture designed primarily to enable the grower to use post-emergent herbicides to control broad-leaf weeds. The herbicides used can also be used on maize so this mix is often used alongside a crop of game cover maize. The grain sorghum stands well into the winter, and the other components produce a huge quantity of seed for farmland birds.
Early Bird Mix
A 1 year feed mixture designed to be drilled early in the spring. Provides good early cover for pheasant poults and partridges. Produces a reliable source of grain throughout the autumn and winter.
Easy Grow
A colourful and impressive looking 1 year mixture. This mix can be sprayed with a pre-emergent herbicide to offer broad-spectrum weed control. Sunflowers and millet in particular produce a huge quantity of high-protein seed for game and farmland birds. The inclusion of grain sorghum ensures the mix stands up will into the winter.
Grass Buster
A winter-hardy brassica mix, so it is ideal for flushing points and wind-breaks. In areas where grass weeds are an issue this is a solid choice. Selective herbicides can be used to kill grass weeds. The crop itself offers excellent cover, feed and nectar. The second-year crop can be just as impressive as the first. This mix has a wide planting window which adds to its appeal. it can be planted from May right through until late July.
Grass Buster & Chicory
Chicory is a great addition to the Grass Buster mix. Chicory is a perennial so it greatly improves the second-year cover and grass weeds can be still controlled in the newly established crop.
Double Trigger
One of our most popular 2 year mixtures. Fast growing ingredients such as fodder radish and phacelia protect the kale from flea beetle and other pests during early establishment. Quinoa produces a huge amount of small palatable seeds throughout the winter.
SOS (Save Our Songbirds)
NEW: Developed to produce a mass of small seeds that will ripen at different times, this will prolong its usefulness to songbirds throughout the colder winter months. This mix has a wide planting window which is favourable for many customers.
UK Mix
A simple but effective game cover mix. Developed to optimise the positives of kale and utopia, whilst minimising the negatives. Utopia establishes much faster than kale, so the utopia means this mix will get going quikcly, spending less time at the vulnerable cotyledon stage. One draw-back to Utopia is the fact that it is an annual, so it can't be left for a second year. By blending Utopia with Kale it means this mix can be left for a second year, reducing the need for risky and costly re-establishment.
