Universal Wildflower Mixture
This mixture will give you good colour in the first year from the Cornfield Annuals and from then on you will start to see more and more other species. Suitable for most all soil types. The companion grass is of standard nature to suit most situation.
Keepers Relief
A fast-growing brassica mix. Many customers broadcast this into struggling game covers to ‘patch-up’ or drill or broadcast into stubble after harvest. The crop that results is ideal for flushing points or can provide a useful wind-break alongside a strip of maize.
Pheasant & Finch
Our trademark 2 year wild-bird mixture, created to benefit both game and farmland birds. The kale will produce a second-year cover, and ensure the mix lasts well into the winter. Grain sorghum stands up well to the elements too. Annual seed producers within the mix will produce a glut of high-energy seed for farmland birds through the autumn and winter.
Autumn Promise
Our most popular summer-sown mixture. Very fast to establish and can be used in a range of scenarios. The inclusion of vetch and buckwheat (non-brassicas) reduces the overall risk of flea beetle damage. Utopia is included to improve the winter-hardiness of the mix. As a general rule Autumn Promise does better drilled rather than broadcasted. When weeds are a serious issue, this mix is a good choice because it can be planted late into a stale seed bed.
Lightning Mustard
The best varieties for game cover. Mustard is a most versatile crop, very easy to plant either by drilling or broadcasting and then harrowing in. It will easily germinate to form a crop loved by both partridge and pheasant. It is relatively pest free due to the strong flavour, and very resilient to the harsh UK climate by being able to cope with drought and cold. It will stop growing when the temperature falls below zero. Many keepers broadcast mustard into standing cereals in July to ensure an early cover.
Top Gun
This is a blend of a grain maize and faster-growing forage type. The mix is superb on challenging soil types, it is popular with customers growing maize on heavy soil types. This variety has excceptional early vigour which results in a very fast establishment. Top Gun FAO 180 - 480 produces a large amount of grain too.
Blaze
Blaze is a blend of extremely colourful annual flowers perfect for brightening up areas of the farm, estate or large garden. With their striking mass of flower heads they attract many different insects and invertebrates. Any prospective land owner should have an area where this can grow and it never fails to impress!
Sown in early spring, these colourful flowers will start producing at the end of June and flower through October. Although most of the species are annuals this mix could last up to three years depending on how they are looked after. They tend to grow on most productive soils, but would prefer not to be in shade.
Old English Meadow
A firm favourite with growers for many years. Our Old English wildflower mix produces a natural display of wildflowers, with subtle pastel shades of flowers blooming throughout the spring and summer creating a stereotypical English countryside wildflower meadow habitat. The species are balanced to ensure they all establish nicely, but the standout species include sainfoin, ox-eye daisy and wild carrot.
Flightpath
Our trademark maize variety. Flightpath FAO 240 is exclusive to Bright Seeds. Medium height with strong stems, it stands brilliantly through the winter. It is a true grain maize, so produced a good amount of grain too. Many customers combine the crop after the season, with expected yields of five or six tonnes per hectare.
Economy
This is a very versatile wildflower mixture with annuals included to give a burst of colour in the first year of planting. Some flowering legumes are included which are big favourites with pollinators. The inclusion of perennial species means that the mix will last for a number of years.
Cornfield Annuals
These fast growing brightly coloured annuals provide extensive cover all summer long and will look a picture in the first two years. Because this mix is made up from annuals, they rely on dropping their seed for the growth in the following year. After this first year, it is a good idea to lightly cultivate the land to promte early new spring growth. The Cornfield Annuial mix generally lasts one to three years depending on management.
Easy Grow
A colourful and impressive looking 1 year mixture. This mix can be sprayed with a pre-emergent herbicide to offer broad-spectrum weed control. Sunflowers and millet in particular produce a huge quantity of high-protein seed for game and farmland birds. The inclusion of grain sorghum ensures the mix stands up will into the winter.
Capetown Blend
A firm favourite with customers for over 20 years. A 50.50 mix of dwarf and medium height variety. Stands brilliantly through the winter and works very well as a wind-break alongside a maize crop.
Storm
A versatile maize variety that ticks all the boxes. Produces a good cob and suited to a ranfe of soil types. We have supplied our Storm FAO 200 maize for many years and it has become a firm favourite with a lot of customers.
Sunflowers
With so much focus on the countryside, growing sunflowers should be in every shoot’s game plan. They cheer people up; all birds love to eat them and the seed is highly nutritious. Easy to grow, they will tolerate most soil types and drought, the young plants are prone to slug damage and rabbits. Mature, well grown sunflowers will provide plenty of food through the winter months, seed crops of 1 tonne per acre are not unknown. Sunflowers are best grown in combination with other crops. Our varieties are commercial and very high yielding. They have excellent standing, are of medium height. Perfect for use in game cover.
Phacelia
Phacelia is used in the UK as a brood rearing crop. Its purple flowers have the tremendous ability to attract a large array of insects. In the summer you can hear a crop of phacelia buzzing. In trials where it has been growing alongside or with a kale it produces an excellent cover, and although an annual, due to its high seed drop will re grow for many years by self-seeding. It’s not hardy enough to withstand frosts and therefore needs to be sown with other crops if it is being considered as part of your cover plans. Where it has been grown alongside kale, we have noticed that the problem of flea beetle is reduced. This could be due to the presence of hover flies in phacelia which feed on the flea beetle.
Spring Triticale
Of all the cereal crops triticale is probably the best for use in game cover situations. Triticale is a hybrid of wheat and rye and will grow on the poorest of soils with pH as low as 4.9. It is very drought and cold tolerant ensuring that it will last well into the season. Triticale shows some tolerance to rabbit attack. It is an ideal crop where maize is not an option and very good in marginal situations. As well as providing food and cover for game birds, it provides great habitat for a number of the declining species of songbirds, such as the Corn Bunting.
Canary Grass
Another long-term cover crop providing a tall tussocky grass up to 6ft. A useful crop for areas where re-planting is impractical or uneconomic such as field margins, set-aside, forest glades or plantations. Canary grass is very versatile having the ability to provide a multi-function cover for nesting, holding and driving. Canary grass should be planted in a minimum 30” rows, ideally 40-60”. The growth nature of canary grass means it creeps in the gaps year after year, eventually resulting in it being too thick. If this occurs our advice is to top it in the early spring and with a nap sack sprayer, spray out large lines to clean up the area enabling the canary grass to grow tall creating a canopy and tunnel. It is a good idea to spin on some lightning mustard to keep the weeds down as canary grass is slow to establish.
Wildflower Pheasant & Finch
A 2 year mixture that carries all the benefits of the standard Pheasant & Finch mix but with the added value of the colourful flowering species. This not only looks attractive throughout the summer but includes nectar producing flowers for a wide variety of pollinating insects.
Moonraker Commerical
Moonraker Commerical is a very hard-wearing general purpose grass, suitable for front and back lawns mowed with a conventional lawn mower. It can also be used for grass banks, verges and in some cases ports pitches.
Universal 80/20
This mixture will give you good colour in the first year from the Cornfield Annuals and from then on you will start to see more and more other species. Suitable for most all soil types. The companion grass is of standard nature to suit most situation.
Six Pack Kale
A unique blend of our kale varieties. Our trials have shown that growing a kale blend often leads to a more successful crop. Fast establishing varieties ensure the mix gets established well, whilst others such a bitteren, have superior winter-standing power and good potential for second-year cover.
Wild Bee
A fast-growing vibrant mixture tailored towards bee species along with many other pollinators. The flowering window is long, with striking blue and purple flowers lasting right through the spring, summer and into the autumn. The wild bee mix is a vigorous mix that establishes quickly.
Miscanthus
Our exclusive variety makes an ideal permanent game cover crop once established. It will provide warmth and shelter and has a thick root ball which increases its standing ability, provides maximum cover and is a suitable height for the beaters. Once established, Miscanthus will last well over 10 years. It has been successfully grown up to 1,000 ft above sea level.
Fodder Radish
PACKED 5KG
Grass Buster
A winter-hardy brassica mix, so it is ideal for flushing points and wind-breaks. In areas where grass weeds are an issue this is a solid choice. Selective herbicides can be used to kill grass weeds. The crop itself offers excellent cover, feed and nectar. The second-year crop can be just as impressive as the first. This mix has a wide planting window which adds to its appeal. it can be planted from May right through until late July.
Chicory
Chicory is a perennial herb used largely for grazing. It is very high in minerals, drought tolerant and has anthelmintic properties (helps to reduce liver fluke and worms in deer and grazing livestock).
If left untouched, chicory will bolt and can grow up to 7ft, providing excellent cover from birds of prey. In winter the tall plants tend to lean over, providing a thick mass of material with a network of tunnels and runways.
It has its uses for temporary hedging. It is easily destroyed and easy to establish, it is widely used as a windbreak and is planted in narrow strips for temporary hedging after six months growth.
Double Trigger
One of our most popular 2 year mixtures. Fast growing ingredients such as fodder radish and phacelia protect the kale from flea beetle and other pests during early establishment. Quinoa produces a huge amount of small palatable seeds throughout the winter.
Radical Pheasant & Finch
This is an annual 1 year version of the standard Pheasant & Finch. In areas where kale struggles to establish fodder radish can be a good alternative. By replacing the kale with fodder radish also means this mix can be used as a ‘clubroot break’ to reduce the risk of disease build-up associated with growing continuous kale. The other components are all included at the same rate so the benefit to farmland birds isn’t compromised.
Pond Edge
This mixture of flowering species can tolerate temporary water-logging so is designed for areas around ponds and streams. The species within the mix have very strong root structures so this mix works well for stabilising banks of newly created ponds too. In mid-summer the main flower colour is yellow and a huge number of pollinating insects will be attracted to the area.
Broad Buster
An annual mixture designed primarily to enable the grower to use post-emergent herbicides to control broad-leaf weeds. The herbicides used can also be used on maize so this mix is often used alongside a crop of game cover maize. The grain sorghum stands well into the winter, and the other components produce a huge quantity of seed for farmland birds.
Horse & Pony Paddock Mixture
Packed 12KG
Heavy Soil
Establishing wildflowers on heavy soil types can be challenging, so we have developed this mixture containing a range of suitable wildflower species. These species can cope with acidic and compacted soils too, and will produce an array of white, yellow, pink and blue flowers throughout the summer.

The ideal choice for woodland glades and rides. The mix can be steady to establish initially, but the bright show of flowers is well worth the wait. This is a perennial mix, so will continue to provide colour for many years.

Hedgerows, Margins & Shaded Areas
Often the areas set-aside for wildflower plots are next to a hedge or located in partial shade. This mix has been developed to grow well in these areas, whilst also fulfilling the objective of producing a vibrant display of colour. Species including red campion, field scabious and vetch produce long-lasting flowers that not only look great but also provide a huge amount of nectar for pollinator species.
Interval Rape/Kale Hybrid
Such hybrids have the speed establishment of rape, but the winter hardiness of kale. Interval is our newest variety, and is the fastest as well as tallest that we've found.
Foxxi
Our late maturing variety, so doesn't generally produce a fully developed cob. A useful trait when corvids, rats and badgers can be an issue. Foxxi FAO 480 is our tallest variety and has very good early vigour, so another good option on marginal maize growing land.

Buckwheat
Buckwheat produces a conical shaped seed, which has real value as an early feed source in cover crops. Fast establishing and sown in May, it competes well against weeds. Seed maturity will be reached in 10 weeks and the seeds shed over several months, so the stubble can hold pheasant and partridge. Duck and deer also love it and it can be sown alongside ponds and in forest glades to attract these game species as well. Does not like the frost.
Acid Soils
Our Acid Soil wildflower mixture is a carefully balanced blend of wildflower species, all of which can tolerate acidic soil types. As a guide if the soil pH is below 6.5 then this mix will be a good option. This is a perennial mixture so will last for many years with eye-catching species such as foxglove, yellow rattle and birds foot trefoil creating a colourful display of flowers through the spring and summer.
