Not too late for Sorghum!
Bright Seeds is advising gamekeepers and shoot managers to fill gaps in maize with sorghum. The specialist seed merchant is highlighting the semi-tropical crop Sorghum as a perfect variety for patching up gaps in maize which are often a result of bird damage. Sorghum is unique in that it is the only crop that can be grown effectively alongside maize.
David Bright, Managing Director of the family company explained: "Sorghum responds best in warm temperatures and sowing it in the hot summer months will provide the best conditions for the forthcoming season."
A number of different varieties of sorghum - which is the world's fifth most important cereal - can be purchased directly from Bright Seeds. These include Jumbo, a giant sorghum that is ideal for sowing during the summer months.
David concluded: "Sorghum requires little moisture and by sowing in late July, good cover can be achieved by October which will last the season. However, it is important not to sow too high a seed rate; 8kg an acre is the optimum.
"We recommend sowing the sorghum variety Jumbo; we can assure shoot managers and gamekeepers that the results will be excellent!"
Some maize herbicides are unsafe to use with sorghum; please check with your agronomist first before sowing.
